Academic Affairs Restructuring

Attached is the current proposal for the restructuring of the Academic Affairs administration including a description of the responsibilities and reporting lines of each administrator. I have been considering a restructuring of the Academic Affairs administration so that my colleagues and I can better perform our functions and continue to provide quality support for faculty and students.

As you know, CUPP spent the 2006-07 academic year considering various options for the new Academic Affairs administrative structure. CUPP members consulted their constituents and, using that feedback, prepared a report outlining six possible structures. CUPP presented this report to me in June 2007. In September, I presented a proposed structure to CUPP and the department chairs and school directors based on this report. I continued to meet with CUPP several times during the fall semester to discuss modifications to the proposed restructuring. I also met with department chairs and school directors in divisional groups during the second half of the fall semester to get their feedback. I held an open forum on Thursday, November 15th, which provided an opportunity for faculty to give feedback about the restructuring. I have continued to meet with CUPP this semester to discuss the restructuring. Refinements to the proposed restructuring were made based on feedback from faculty and CUPP. This document reflects those refinements. The main change in the structure is the addition of a new associate dean who will facilitate work on the curriculum. I also address the desire by faculty to increase the percolation of ideas from the faculty to the administration. Please see attached document for more details.

I also would be happy to answer any questions you have about the proposed restructuring. I anticipate making changes to the current positions of the Associate Provost, Associate Dean of Faculty, and Assistant Provost/Registrar, e.g. title changes and modifications to the responsibilities, starting in the 2008-09 academic year. The new Associate Dean of Curriculum search will occur during the 2008-09 academic year and the start date for this new person will be August 1, 2009, barring any major problems arising.
